Medical + Pharmacy Open Claims – Data Quality Notice - 5/8/2025
Change Healthcare Cyberattack Impact: 2024 Disruption
The declines in both Medical and Pharmacy claim volumes in 2024 are primarily due to the industry-wide disruption caused by the Change Healthcare cyberattack in February 2024. This incident significantly impacted claim submission and processing across the U.S. healthcare system.
Impact
- Year-over-year comparisons for 2024 are less reliable
- Forecasting models and historical backtests may be skewed due to incomplete or delayed claims
- Decreased visibility into medical and pharmacy utilization patterns for affected periods
Our Gameplan
To address these disruptions, we are developing a panelized view that adjusts for 2024 anomalies. This will allow clients to minimize noise and improve model accuracy when analyzing 2024 data.
Interim Recommendations
While we work on the updated panel:
- In the coming weeks users can use functions to aggregate daily data to weekly or monthly level within our Workspace tool to evaluate short-term trends. In the meantime data is available at a Daily level temporal filter.
- Normalize spend and claim counts by daily active users to approximate scaled patient behavior.
- Avoid direct y/y comparisons using raw 2024 data.
- Users should leverage the Code options to extract large volumes of data. Download CSV options with this data may time out and are limited to small samples.
